Abstract

The development and progress of info-technology in this era of Industrial Revolution 4.0 has brought human life to a more complex communication revolution framework. Issues regarding the use of the internet, especially the cyber aspect, are also increasing, especially regarding the effects that cause harm to ourself and others. The existence of unlimited social media has further increased the rate of cyber attacks. Therefore, the protection of application software and personal information is a necessity where individuals who are often victims of cyber attacks are among students. Students were found to be insensitive of protecting their personal information in cyberspace. In this context, the Islamic religion through Maqāṣid al-Sharī’ah is able to help students to overcome this problem. As for the five important elements (Al-Ḍarūriyāt al-Khams) in Maqāṣid al-Sharī’ah, namely the protection of religion (Hifz al-Dīn), protection of life (Hifz al-Nafs), protection of the intellect (Hifz al-'Aql), protection of lineage (Hifz al-Nasab) and protection of property (Hifz al-Mal) can be use as a guide in the aspect of cybersecurity to avoid harm to ourself and others. This study will examine the level of students' awareness of cybersecurity based on Maqāṣid al-Sharī’ah and examine their level of knowledge on application software and personal information protection. A quantitative approach using a survey was conducted to 580 students. The data was analyzed descriptively using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The results of the study explain that students' awareness and knowledge towards the cybersecurity and personal information protection based on Maqāṣid al-Sharī’ah were at a moderate level. Complying with procedures, guidelines and recommendations regarding cybersecurity from the relevant parties should be taken seriously by students. In addition, the application of moral values advocated by Islam is a priority to control oneself from committing immoral acts and further avoid the occurrence of internet abuse and becoming a cyber victim. Cyber knowledge is also a key factor to increase awareness of cybersecurity which is based on Maqāṣid al-Sharī’ah. So with that, students are able to evaluate and realize which things are appropriate and inappropriate to do in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
