P089 Integrating Local Culture and Multiculturalism in Visual Art Education: Perspectives of Visual Arts Students in University Teknologi MARA
Abstract
The integration of local culture and multiculturalism in visual art education plays a significant role in fostering cultural awareness, creativity, and appreciation of diversity among students. In the context of globalization, visual arts education serves as an important platform for preserving local cultural heritage while promoting respect for multicultural values. This study adopted a qualitative case study approach, with data collected through semi-structured interviews. The interviews involved 20 visual arts students and five lecturers to explore their perspectives on the integration of local culture and multiculturalism in visual art education. This study aims to examine the perspectives of visual arts students on the integration of local culture and multiculturalism in visual art education. Specifically, the study investigates students' levels of awareness, perceptions, and attitudes toward the incorporation of local cultural elements and multicultural values in their learning experiences. A quantitative research design will be employed using a structured questionnaire administered to undergraduate visual arts students. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential analyses to identify relationships between students' perceptions and selected demographic variables. The findings are expected to provide insights into the effectiveness of integrating local culture and multiculturalism in visual art education and its contribution to students' cultural identity, artistic creativity, and intercultural competence. This study is expected to contribute to the development of culturally responsive visual art education practices and provide recommendations for educators, curriculum developers, and higher education institutions in strengthening cultural sustainability and inclusive learning environments.
