P079 AI Companions in Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Education: A Systematic Review from a Maqasid al-Shariah Perspective
Abstract
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) companions has transformed the way adolescents access sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information by offering personalised, interactive, and readily available digital support. These technologies have considerable potential to enhance health education through timely information delivery and user-centred engagement. However, growing concerns persist regarding misinformation, privacy protection, ethical accountability, algorithmic bias, and the influence of AI-generated content on adolescents’ sexual attitudes and decision-making. Despite the expanding body of literature on AI-assisted health education, current evidence remains fragmented, particularly concerning its educational effectiveness, ethical implications, and compatibility with value-based sexual education frameworks. This systematic review aims to synthesise existing evidence on the role of AI companions in adolescent sexual and reproductive health education and to examine their implications for developing educational approaches grounded in Maqasid al-Shariah. The review follows the PRISMA 2020 guidelines through comprehensive searches of the Scopus and Web of Science databases using predefined keywords related to AI companions, adolescents, and sexual and reproductive health. Studies published between 2021 and 2026 are screened according to predefined eligibility criteria and analysed using thematic synthesis. The review is expected to identify key themes relating to the educational applications of AI companions, their potential to improve adolescents’ SRH knowledge and access to reliable information, as well as challenges associated with misinformation, privacy risks, ethical concerns, and exposure to inappropriate content. The findings are expected to provide evidence-based recommendations for educators, researchers, and policymakers to support the responsible integration of AI technologies into adolescent SRH education while strengthening educational frameworks informed by Maqasid al-Shariah that promote holistic well-being, moral development, and informed decision-making in the digital era.
