P073 Mapping the Rumah Ngaji Movement in Sarawak: A Preliminary Study
Abstract
Rumah Ngaji is a community-based Qur’anic learning movement that promotes engagement with the Qur’an through the approach of Baca, Faham dan Amal al-Quran—reading, understanding and practising the Qur’an. The movement provides flexible learning spaces through homes, mosques, surau, community facilities, educational institutions and other local settings. In Sarawak, Rumah Ngaji has developed through grassroots organisers, volunteer teachers, local learning centres and collaboration with public and Islamic institutions. In Sarawak, the movement has developed through grassroots organisers, volunteer teachers, local learning centres and partnerships with public and Islamic institutions. This paper utilizes a mixed-method study of the Rumah Ngaji Movement in Sarawak. The study has two objectives: first, to explore the motivations behind the establishment and participation in Rumah Ngaji; and second, to map the development of Rumah Ngaji across Sarawak. The preliminary review indicates that Rumah Ngaji in Sarawak is motivated by the aspiration to strengthen Qur’anic literacy, promote a Qur’an-centred way of life, improve access to informal religious learning, encourage community participation and create inclusive learning environments for different age groups. Evidence also indicates gradual expansion through local centres and collaborations involving Rumah Ngaji Sarawak, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Islamic Information Centre, Majlis Islam Sarawak, mosques, community groups and educational institutions.
