Abstract

A holistic understanding of indigenous peoples ' perspectives is specifically discussed in the indigenous counseling scientific discussion, as a support in considering counseling intervention designs for indigenous clients. Long before the emergence of scientific discussions of psychology and counseling, indigenous peoples have developed ways of preventing and solving problems based on the results of experience and observations from generation to generation. One of the problem-solving practices ingrained in the lives of Malay-Bugis in Punggur Kecil Village is the practice of abstinence. This study seeks to understand, describe, and discuss aspects of problems and coping strategies in the Malay-Bugis in Punggur Kecil village which is illustrated through the practice of abstinence. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Data collection was conducted through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with elders and local communities. Through research conducted on the practice of abstinence in the lives of Malay-Bugis in the village of Punggur Kecil, the researchers concluded that: (1) the problem is a situation and conditions that are not expected, both in health, finance, relationships, to problems in belief. (2) problems arise from the imbalance of actions taken by one or a group of people in the fulfillment of good and bad value standards that refer to beliefs, philosophical meanings, and culture. (3) problem coping strategies illustrated through the pantang larang practices of the Malays in Punggur Kecil village, namely: identification of problematic actions, restoration of balance, prevention of relapse.
