P041 The Role of Pantun as a Cultural Medium for Multiethnic Peacebuilding in West Kalimantan: An Ethnographic Study from the Perspective of Islamic Educational Sociology
Abstract
Pantun is a form of Malay oral cultural heritage that embodies social, moral, and spiritual values essential for fostering harmonious relationships. In West Kalimantan, where diverse ethnic groups such as Malays, Dayaks, Chinese, and other communities coexist, pantun serves not only as a cultural expression but also as a medium of communication that promotes peace. This study aims to analyze the role of pantun as a medium for peacebuilding in West Kalimantan's multi-ethnic society from the perspective of the sociology of Islamic education. The research employed a descriptive method with an ethnographic approach to explore the meanings, practices, and socio-religious values embedded in the pantun tradition. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of community cultural practices. The findings reveal that pantun functions as a form of social education that promotes tolerance, mutual respect, solidarity, and peaceful conflict resolution. From the perspective of the sociology of Islamic education, pantun serves as a medium for internalizing Islamic values, including ukhuwah insaniyah (universal human brotherhood), compassion, deliberation (shura), and respect for others. Therefore, pantun makes a strategic contribution as a medium of cultural and peace education, strengthening social integration and fostering harmony within the multi-ethnic society of West Kalimantan.
